SHOOTING STAR FARM

Beginning of Summer Update

Did you guys think I had disappeared again? Just crazy busy. The farm has been insane. A good insane, but insane, nonetheless. The Gem Saga For those of you who haven’t been following Gem’s story on Facebook, this is our Jovian x Totilas x Jazz filly, Regaltes SSF, aka, Gem. I found her on three legs in her stall on a Monday morning a little over a month ago, Temp was 104. She was presenting as if she had an abscess, pointing the left hind hoof. Long story short, after multiple vet visits,...

Reflections on the KWPN Stallion Selection Process

Take a nap or write a journal entry? That’s where I’m at right now. It’s a beautiful, bright, sunny day in New Hampshire, albeit a bit chilly. We haven’t been above freezing day or night for four or five days. Nonetheless, it’s really nice out. I could go for a walk. Or, I could take a nap. My sleep schedule has been screwed up ever since I got up at 2:30 am for a few days in a row to watch the KWPN Stallion Show. Now, for some reason, I can’t sleep much past 5:00 am, regardless of when I go...

A New Year’s Message and Update

End of Summer/Fall Update

So Many Exciting Things Happening at SSF! It would probably make more sense to split this journal entry into multiple postings rather than one long post, but we all know how much difficulty I seem to have finding the time to write in the first place, so I’m just going to go for it, and see how much I can cram into one entry.   It has been an absolutely insane summer and fall. Due to COVID, Gaudi’s popularity over the previous two breeding seasons, and fewer foals due this year, I was...

A Reader’s Questions About Breeding Dressage Horses

I spend a lot of time each week answering people’s questions about breeding. It seems as if I always have multiple text, email, or Messenger threads going at the same time. I always enjoy these conversations, and I’m always happy to share what I can from our experiences breeding and raising dressage horses these last 30+ years, but it does take some time and thought. The series of questions below came in a couple months ago. I intended to have a telephone conversation with this person because...
